Godot 4.8 has reached beta 1, according to the Godot Engine blog. The project says 4.8 is now fully in feature freeze and that developer resources are going exclusively to creating and reviewing regression fixes. There are no new features compared with dev 7. The post is a round-up of the whole 4.8 cycle, including some additions not covered in earlier snapshots. This is a beta, so treat it as testing material.
The team is asking for help finding bugs and points people to its bug-hunting sprints. To join, read the Bug Triage Introduction and join the #bugsquad and #bugsquad-sprints channels on the developer RocketChat. Besides the downloads, you can try the Web editor, the XR editor or the Android editor. Android pre-release builds require a request to join the testing group.
On the engine side, Trail3D (GH-117107) is a native node for trail effects, so you no longer need to deal with mesh drawing or UV assignment yourself. It builds on Zi Ye's Cozy Cube Godot Addons. FuzzySearch (GH-98278, GH-107126) returns approximate matches rather than only exact ones, and it is now ready for all users. Serialization of objects is also cleaner (GH-92102), so that they should not cause oversized diffs in version control. Other core changes include a faster Object property access (1.6x, per GH-122596) and about 12 MB less runtime RAM (GH-122751).
The editor changes are the largest group. The main screen is now a dock (GH-113051): main screen editors are regular EditorDocks, can be closed, and can float, with the Game screen as the exception. Game, 2D and 3D have new toolbars. Other additions include drag-toggling visibility in the scene tree, pseudolocalization in the editor, resource auto-expansion in the inspector, playing a scene from the FileSystem context menu, and glob-based search in the FileSystem. Runtime manipulation of CanvasItems arrives in GH-122510. Symbol renaming (GH-117949) is described as experimental. The documentation also gains native admonitions, which will replace the "Note:" and "Warning:" prefixes gradually.
Before testing, read the breaking changes, which you can find by filtering merged PRs in the 4.8 milestone with the breaks compat label. Examples include forbidding scripts from inheriting their own inner classes, making Android OS.alert() blocking, updating mbedTLS to 4.1.0, and ignoring joypads on unfocused windows by default for new projects. The LookAtModifier3D.is_interpolating() value, which was inverted, is also fixed. The post says Godot is maintained by volunteers and a small team of paid contributors, and asks those who can to donate.
